I Cor. 11:5-6
I Cor. 11:5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved. 6 So if a woman's head is not covered, her hair should be cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should be covered.
14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her as a covering.
At the risk of starting theological warfare; the above scriptures are what our denomination uses to support the uncut hair our women sport. My hair has not been cut for over 9 years and is currently about mid calf. When it is completely up in a bun, it is not very noticeable, but if I do a half bun, it hangs below my bottom and, of course, when its completely down, it usually attracts quite a bit of attention.
Kome, the Greek word used for long in this scripture means uncut. Shorn is to trim to an even length and it says it is a shame for a woman's head to be shorn. (As a sign of humiliation, captured women had their hair shaved off.)
I made a deal with God when I first decided to let my hair grow. I told Him that I would not cut my hair and do everything I could to keep it nice looking (I don't tease, blow dry, use curlers, hair pins, etc.) but that He would have to keep it from looking trashy.
As always, God will do exceedingly, abundantly above what we ask or think. (Eph 3:20) I quite regularly have people come up to me and specifically tell me; "You know, most people with long hair have really nasty ends but yours is beautiful!" Every time that happens, it is just like God is reaching down and patting me on the shoulder, keeping His end of the deal.
I noticed in Vegas that people are very friendly. Any time you are waiting in line, riding the elevator, sitting at a show, etc., people are asking where you are from, if you are having fun and how about that 115 degree heat. It was the third day I was there before I realized that no one had even mentioned my hair. Since the casino's are kept quite cool I had even had it all the way down for warmth. I had to laugh. I knew I did not cut it for spiritual reasons, but I had no idea there was so much spiritual importance attached to it and that it would also be affected by the spiritual "dead zone" I was in.
1 Peter 3:15 says to always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you. What being in Vegas for 3 days proved to me (again) was that the spiritual side is real, the battle does exist and satan is the prince and power of this world. Normally my hair will witness for me and I use the compliments I get to start discussions about the LORD. In a city where the wild is mundane and the bizarre everyday, I guess calf length hair is no big deal.
Sincerely,
Deborah
